as in Boston. Trumpet and trombone playing was more appreciated than good singing or the finer points of music.
Shortly after 1830 we find the Musical Fund Society, the Euterpean Society, and the Sacred Music Society coexistent in New York. The Euterpean Society was an instrumental one and had been in existence from the very beginning of the nineteenth century, being founded a trifle later than Graupner's little band in Boston.
But the real beginning of thorough musical organisation took pJlace at a much later time. The New York Philharmonic Society first organised April 2, 1842, and gave its opening concert Dec. 7, 1842. This association, so important in the development of orchestral music in this country, was mainly due to the efforts of Uriah C.
